Department of Pharmacognosy


Pharmacognosy is the study of medication derived from natural sources. It is defined as "the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources. It is also defined as the study of crude drugs. Although most pharmacognostic studies focus on plants and medicines derived from plants, other types of organisms are also regarded as pharmacognostically interesting, in particular, various types of microbes (bacteria, fungi, etc.), and, recently, various marine organisms.

About HOD

Mr. Monesh Likhitkar is an alumnus of prestigious instututions like SGSITS, Indore and Barkatullah University, Bhopal. He is a GATE qualified person and has over 6 years of teaching experience. He has supervised many UG and PG students in their project work. He also looks after the training and placement at the college level.

The college has a very good collection of many traditional plant parts used as medicines. It also has the necessary infrastructure to carry out the extraction, purification and standardization of the herbal drugs. All experiments are carried out in accordance with the method prescribed in the standard texts.

Labs & Facilities:

B Pharm. Lab: B.Pharm. labs are equipped with instruments required for extraction and evaluation of crude drugs. Lab is equipped with projection microscopes, oil emersion microscope with microphotographic facility.

M.Pharm Lab: The sophisticated lab contains state of the art facility for research and development of herbal formulation. Lab is equipped with tincture press, soxhlet units, zone reader, electrophoresis equipment.

The institute also possess Herbal garden with well known as well as rare medicinal plants.
